Our Priorities
Strong Communities:
Urban Sustainability & Infrastructure Upgrade
Advocate for a National Transit Strategy:
..as the first pillar of a broader urban sustainability agenda. Canadian cities suffer from an estimated $240-billion infrastructure deficit.
(source: Federation of Canadian Municipalities).
This deficit has been felt strongly in Calgary, where Conservative MPs take us for granted.
The National Transit Strategy is an urgent and essential initiative for Calgary, critical in helping the city manage its explosive growth. Calgary’s transit system is one of the best in North America for a city its size – but it needs to be bigger and better! The Green Party’s “Smart Communities” initiative aims to give cities like Calgary much more freedom to set their own priorities and find revenue streams to fund them.
Smart Economy:
Smart Development of Canada’s Energy Resources
It’s time for a new conversation about energy in Calgary Centre and across Canada.
The Green Party will lead that conversation.
The 21st century belongs to those cities and countries that take the front ranks in the emerging global green economy. Canada’s vast natural resource wealth must be recognized as an engine to fuel its leap to the front ranks of that economy.
Be absolutely clear: The Greens have a moderate, classically progressive conservative fiscal plan to diversify Canada’s energy sector. We see the oil and gas industry as a strategic partner in building Canada’s green economy.
We support a national energy strategy like the one championed by Alison Redford. Stephen Harper’s divisive government rejects constructive criticism and attacks critics of Calgary’s largest industry rather than engaging them. The “social license” to operate is vital to the industry’s long-term success.
True Democracy
Bring Real Transparency to Parliament & Rebuild Canada’s Global Brand
This is Calgary’s moment.
There is a tremendous energy in this city, a spirit of openness and collaboration that our current crop of Conservative MPs do not give proper voice to in Ottawa. The Conservatives promised accountability and have created the most secretive, centralized, divisive Parliament in Canadian history.
The Green Party promises real accountability, true independence from special interests and a re-commitment to Canada’s democratic tradition at home and abroad.
We will advocate amending the Accountability Act to ensure all those who monitor government are selected at arm’s length from those they monitor. We will fight to restore funding for vital scientific research and environmental monitoring such as the PEARL facility in the high Arctic and the Experimental Lakes Area.
We will work to restore Canada’s global reputation for peacekeeping, humanitarian aid and environmental stewardship.
We will advocate for the reinstatement of funding for refugee health care and build a path to full citizenship for temporary foreign workers.
